The Pecking Order Is Real

The phrase "pecking order" comes directly from chicken behavior, and it's an apt one. Flocks establish clear dominance hierarchies through a combination of posturing, vocalizations, and yes — actual pecking. Once the hierarchy is established, it tends to be stable, and lower-ranking birds generally know to defer.

This structure serves a purpose. A well-organized flock:

They Communicate More Than You Think

Chickens have been documented using over 30 distinct vocalizations, each carrying specific meaning. These include:

• A soft clucking that hens use to call chicks to food
• A sharp alarm call distinguishing aerial predators from ground predators
• A low rumble used during dust bathing that researchers associate with contentment

Roosters perform an elaborate tidbitting display — clucking rapidly while picking up and dropping food — to alert hens to a good find. It's both practical and, researchers believe, a form of courtship.

Signs of Emotional Complexity

Perhaps most surprisingly, studies have found that hens display something resembling empathy. When chicks were exposed to mild stress, their mothers showed measurable physiological responses — increased alertness, decreased preening — consistent with emotional contagion.
